Port seeks bidders for Spotts dock spruce up
(CNS Business): The Port Authority of the Cayman Islands has issued a request for proposals for bids on the upgrade at Spotts Dock, the area where cruise ships traditionally anchor when weather conditions prevent them from coming into the George Town Harbour. A release on the port’s website asks for suitably qualified contractors to work on security fencing, masonry walling and general redecoration work at the location.
“Contractors will be required to hold a valid Trade and Business Licence and demonstrate a proven track record on similar projects over CI$100,000 in value,” the release states.
It also indicates that the tender documents are available at a local property consultant rather than from the authority itself. The deadline for bids is noon Monday 14 December and officials said the contract would be awarded under applicable laws of the Cayman Islands.
The contract is not being managed by the Central Tenders Committee and comes as government continues its talks with the cruise lines over the proposed cruise berthing facility in George Town. Even if government goes ahead with the controversial and environmentally threatening project, it will still need the Spotts Dock facility as back-up. There will still be circumstances when, despite spending what could be as much as $300 million on the piers, ships won’t be able to dock in the capital.
Meanwhile, the port board recently also confirmed that Clement Reid, who had been acting in the top port job, has been appointed as the authority’s director. Reid was selected as the most suitable candidate with the “vision and experience to progress the PACI forward”.
He joined the PACI in 1999 and has held various executive management positions within the organization since then. He becomes the boss at an interesting time for the authority, given government’s plans for the cruise project.

Congratulations, Mr. Clement Reid, on your new promotion as Port Director I know you will be a great listener and enforcer of those facilities. Thank God you understand how important Spotts dock. May I suggest cement area for the pickup area for older people to climb into busses especially with walkers and wheel chairs and more tents for pickup at both piers in case of rain and hot sun. Thank you for listening.
We will attempt to do this during the Northwester season when we may need to use the dick, why not earlier so we would be ready for Christmas.
