Bolt signs up as Digicel’s speed chief
(CNS Business): Triple-triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt has signed a lifetime partnership agreement with telecommunications company Digicel as its chief speed officer (CSO). Bolt “will get up close and personal with Digicel customers in a number of ways”, the regional telecommunication company said, as it seeks to capitalise on Bolt’s fame and speed. The unique position is being called a ‘job for life’, but the famous sprinter may not be hanging up his golden track shoes just yet, despite announcements after the 2016 Rio Olympics.
While Bolt is now considering competing in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, the job as the face of Digicel will provide him with a career even after his eventual retirement.
“My coach always says, ‘Usain you can always go on to the 2020 Olympics if you want’,” he said, “so this is why he tells me to stop talking about retirement and just take it a year at a time.”
The firm said that from a commercial and community point of view, Bolt would “continue to inspire, motivate and captivate customers and fans across the globe” for many years to come.
“The innovative new partnership will see Usain bringing his unique understanding of speed to customers via Digicel products, networks and marketing and partnership initiatives — and to aspiring youth athletes via speed camps, motivational and mentorship sessions,” Digicel said in a release about Bolt’s new role with the company.
Having achieved his goal for the ‘three-peat’ at the Rio Games last month, winning gold in three events at three consecutive Games, it is clear that Bolt has secured his name in the pages of sports history as one of the greatest athletes ever.
Speaking about his partnership with Digicel, Bolt said, “I’m very humbled. It’s been an amazing journey with Digicel. They have been there for me since I was 17 years old and now we will be together forever. As Digicel CSO, I am opening a new chapter and will be making it my mission to ensure that speed stays at the top of the agenda.”
