Cruise tourism continues to grow
(CNS Business): As promised by the tourism minister, the dire decline in cruise ship numbers has been reversed with figures suggesting that 2014 could be the best year for the sector for a decade. In October 111,951 passengers arrived in George Town on 37 ships the best numbers for this month since 2003 and 32.44% up on last year. According to the port authority, the November figures are also excellent with 127,212 passengers calling at the destination compared to 118,360 last year, boosting the annual figure for 2014 past last year’s total already, with December figures (one of the busiest months) still to come.
According to the Department of Tourism, the cruise figures by the end of October were running at an increase of more than 20% on last year.
Meanwhile, at the airport overnight visitors continue to increase. Yet again Cayman recorded significant numbers of tourists coming to the destination to stay and with 18,890 arrivals that was the best October since 2000 and 17.75% up on 2013. The annual figure for overnight guests is now running at more than 12.5% up on 2013, setting the destination on track for another record-breaking year in tourism.
