Hurley’s Supermarket, Grand Harbour location

(CNS Business): More than a dozen years after Hurricane Ivan struck Grand Cayman, one local supermarket is still in dispute with neighbouring property owners over a store it owns in George Town. The former Hurley’s Supermarket at the Eden Centre on Walkers Road remains at the centre of a dispute between the owners of the grocery shop and other property owners at the site.

In a legal claim, short on detail, Hurley’s has asked the court to intervene in the dispute by declaring that it is entitled to rebuild the supermarket and that the strata corporation should pay 48.72% of the balance of the insurance money to Hurley’s.

When CNS contacted the owners of Hurley’s, they said they were unable to comment on the case but confirmed that the situation at the Eden Centre is a private commercial dispute and has nothing to do with government. Earlier this month Ellio Solomon launched his election bid from the land adjacent to the site and made allegations that the area, which is still largely derelict, was a fault of the current Progressive government.

However, the court action implies that Bicar Limited, a company about which no significant information seems to be publicly available, and Hurley’s were part of a joint strata plan which had made and received an insurance claim regarding the damage. No other details are available as to the true nature of the dispute. The request by Hurley’s seems to imply that it has been prevented from redeveloping the store or from getting its insurance claim.

The store was once a popular spot and was recently the subject of an Ask Auntie question on CNS Local Life after readers expressed a hope that the store would one day return to the area.

I would be curious to know if the plant nursery next door to it and who is dumping all of the yard clippings to an adjacent lot from their illegal trailer (which has no break lights or license plates)is actually operating legally at this location with a trade and business license etc.

This report claims that Ellio Solomon publicly made allegations that “the area, which is still largely derelict, was a fault of the current Progressives government.”
It is so ironic that Mr. Solomon can call me to get permission to hold a political meeting at the same Eden Centre (E.C.) property, & he can call me to ask permission to put up a political banner there, but he cannot call me to get the real truth about the situation with E.C. I can say with 100% certainty & truthfulness that the failure to do so had nothing to do with any government, & most definitely nothing to do with the current Progressives government.
In fact, after E.C. was badly damaged by hurricane Ivan in 2004, it was under the PPM government at the time that planning permission was granted to rebuild a completely new shopping centre, & it was because of one person, & one person alone, why that never happened.
My father Derek B. Wight, my older brother Brian, & I met almost every month with our banker, & we were given financing in principle to redevelop.
Just two days before our father tripped & fell at the back of E.C., he, Brian & I were at a meeting at the bank about financing for the redevelopment (that is why it is my humble opinion that I hold that one person responsible for the death of our father, but that’s just my opinion.) Our father’s dream was to rebuild E.C. & he fought hard for the last seven years of his life to try & see that dream come true, but one person alone deprived him of that dream, & I can honestly say that it was not any politician or government, Progressives or UDP, that caused it, as alleged by Mr. Solomon.
I know some politicians will say anything in an attempt to get elected, but I can truthfully say that these allegations are very dishonest & wrong, & all Mr. Solomon had to do was call me to get the truth, like he does so readily when he wants a favor.
Making such wild & ignorant allegations against any government will not help Mr. Solomon in his cause to get elected. If anything it will hurt, because most people know the truth, & I still believe that most people prefer truth over dishonesty, but that’s just my humble opinion.

Just to make it clear, after hurricane Ivan in 2004, the PPM were elected into office in May 2005, & it was under the PPM government between 2005 – 2009 that planning permission was granted to redevelop Eden Centre.
And finally, if in fact Mr. Solomon did make those allegations (I was not at the meeting so I do not know what was said, I’m only going off what the report above says,) then as the saying goes (sort of) “that what we get,” because if that is how Mr. Solomon shows his appreciation & thanks it is very sad & insulting. A simple phone call would have prevented these false allegations.

Just to clarify are you saying that you blame the banker?

        • Anonymous says:

Definitely not the banker!! I said one person & one person alone, not an institution, company, or business, but one person alone! My father Derek, brother Brian, & I met almost monthly with our banker who was as excited as we were to see the redevelopment of Eden Centre, & went out of his way to do all he could to get this project off the ground. As I said he had approved financing in principle, so I would never blame the bank or banker. We thanked the banker at every meeting for his dedication & patience, & apologized over & over for the stubbornness of that one person, & one person alone.

Look who thinks they are a big man now that they are one of darts buddies.
I’m still confused why no one else sees Dart buying the tv and radio stations as a first step alon gthe Chinese strategy to own and control the media.

Dart is using the classic ploy. If you want to take over a nation you must first take control of the press. Direct ownership is not important it is the “control ” that is important. Financing the ventures gives him the control he needs.

Is it true that Dart also bought out or controls the Compass newspaper? If that is true I guess all thats left now is for them to get their own supermarket and bank. Then they will really have their own little kingdom.

Hurleys ran out of money. They couldn’t afford to rebuild and they probably want the insurance money now because they ran out again and need it for something else or to repay uncle DART for the radio bailout.

    • Anonymous says:

They probably want some of the insurance money because they were helping pay the premiums and had some of the damages for which a claim was filed and granted.

That’s Ellio for you, spewing all kinds of BS and hoping that something sticks.

Ellio, if you started out lying already, please drop out and save some face for the rest of the Solomons.
