CIG to use private sector more in fleet maintenance
(CNS Business): The government has said it will be using the private sector more when it comes to the maintenance of its small vehicle fleet but ongoing reviews of the public sector, which are currently focused on planning ministry departments, are a long way from privatization. Officials said the roll-out of the CIG Vehicle Standardisation, Procurement and Use Policy, making it compulsory for government to secure four-year maintenance packages on all new vehicles, is already helping cut costs. Private sector vendors are now responsible for all new vehicles, reducing the demand on the Department of Vehicle and Equipment Services.
Government is currently replacing older vehicles in the fleet to cut maintenance and is now avoiding mixed vehicle manufacturers within the fleet to reduce the specialised maintenance and depending on more private warranties.
The DVES is one of several departments being scrutinized by the Project Future team, which is working on cutting the size and cost of government for the long term. Officials said that a review identified a range of improvements, which are set out in a report that was published at the end of last month, which have now been endorsed by Cabinet
The Strategic Assessment does not advocate many changes, as officials believe the department is already making changes that are cutting costs.
