accounting2_compressed(CNS Business): Public sector accounts and other staff will be joining with experts from the private sector during a professional development conference this week hosted by the Cayman Islands Society of Professional Accountants (CISPA) and government and supported by the Office of the Auditor General. The three-day seminar will focus on a variety of relevant topics, from auditing to the management of public cash. The annual seminar is set against the continued backdrop of difficulties with public finances. As government begins to meet its obligations to report on its finances in accordance with the law, even more problems are now being revealed.

While the actual accounts are getting filed, the quality of the information interpreting the financial statements remains poor. And where it is more transparent, it is revealing a host of new problems when it comes to the misuse and abuse of public funds.

Home affairs facing numerous challenges

During the three-day conference experts from the private sector and senior government officials will present seminars to address some of the thorny problems that are challenging the government’s number crunchers, as well as the actual use of public funds and providing value for money.
