Owen Roberts Airport future redevelopment

(CNS): The Cayman Islands Airports Authority has started the process to find a general contractor to undertake the renovation and expansion of Owen Roberts International Airport terminal. Airport officials said the first step is to prequalify general contractors for the second but main phase of the project. This contract will be for the terminal building, including approximately 100,000 sq. ft. of new extensions to the east, west and north, as well as renovation of the existing terminal building and additional parking in the area of the current fuel farm.

The CIAA said it expected construction of Phase 2 would start in January next year and be completed in the first half of 2018. Work began at the airport just a few weeks ago on a new baggage handling area, which has to be completed before the main phase can begin. Despite the relocation of the baggage area, which will help the development process, the contractors will be working around a functioning airport.

“One of the biggest challenges identified is ensuring that the terminal building will remain fully operational throughout the construction period,” said CIAA CEO Albert Anderson. “The safety and security of staff, users and the travelling public remains paramount.”

To facilitate the operational requirements of the airport, work will be carried out in a number of sub-phases, which is why the project has a two and a half year timeline, he explained.

The CIAA is now asking for applications to prequalify from established general contractors with experience on high-value, multi-phase projects, including those carried out in existing facilities and with strict safety and security requirements.

Beautiful building but my question is – if visitors arrive in a down pour of rain, will they really notice the beauty of the building when they arrive inside if they all drenched and miserable…

If they had gone with the Canadian airport development proposal there would have been no crony boondoggle. The Canadian team would never have put up with this BS.

There we go the Vanuk team with conflicts between the Governor at the time and local business people attending board meeting to influence the board under the guise of introducing them. I guess that’s where the expression skin in the game originated.
