Cayman’s internet domain set to go global

Cayman News Service(CNS Business): The Information & Communications Technology Authority (ICTA) will be opening up access to the .KY domain on the global market Wednesday, allowing anyone in the world to register a local Cayman domain on a first-come, first-served basis. Managing Director Alee Fa’amoe said that the ICTA has identified interest on the international stage for the .KY domain and hopes to generate revenue from registering more names.  Cayman residents will still be able to register a .KY after the global launch but anyone who has a specific name in mind needs to register it as soon as possible before it is taken by someone in the international community.

“We’re not necessarily anticipating a huge influx of domain registrations from outside the Cayman Islands come 2 September,” said Fa’amoe, “but we have been contacted by a number of registrars who want to market and sell the domain for us.”

The ICTA boss explained that the authority has been working with the Cayman-based domain firm Uniregistry to register existing domains still in use and sign up new local applicants. He said a significant amount of time has been spent cleaning up the registry, getting rid of the non-Cayman based domain registrants, re-registering existing owners and sending out regular emails to .KY domain registrants to remind them of the need to renew before the .KY is opened up for sale internationally.

“We know that there is a market out there with people interested in securing popular names or acronyms that they can tie to the .KY domain,” Fa’amoe added in a release this week announcing the impending global launch.

He said during the local clean-up phase there have been a number of new registrations and he encourages local people, businesses and organisations to secure their .KY domain names before the international launch to avoid future lengthy domain disputes.

The opening up of the .KY will see the major players in the world domain business buying up local names, smart acronyms, potentially popular domain names or the names of existing businesses that have not already been registered at the current annual ragte of 39.98 in the hope of selling them back to interested parties for a much higher fee.

This is too early; an attempt to force the hands the internet users in Cayman, and not in the best interests of business in Cayman.
