(CNS Business): UCCI School of Hospitality Studies held their first annual awards ceremony Thursday night and recognised 19 young Caymanians who had successfully completed the program. The hospitality school was launched in September 2014 and the course has been designed so that students experience many different aspects of Cayman’s hospitality sector.

Tourism Minister Moses Kirkconnell described the Cayman Islands as “one of the fastest growing tourism areas of this region”, and said, “If the young people and the people of the Cayman Islands don’t benefit from the tourism industry, then we are doing something wrong.”

As part of the school’s curriculum, the hospitality students had the opportunity to combine traditional classroom learning with hands-on cooperative training at local businesses, including restaurants, hotels, and resorts, and earned a City & Guilds vocational certificate for hospitality.

The semester began with an orientation phase, which introduced students to a variety of tourism and hospitality careers. From there, students took a combination of courses on financial management, Cayman Islands history, customer service, and geography.

CNS Business reporter Jamie Hicks spoke with several students who have already found employment through this programme and why they think it was such a success. Watch the video to learn more.
