(CNS Business): One of the first restaurants to open in Camana Bay along the flagship ‘restaurant row’ is pulling out of the Dart-owned town and the Cayman Islands. After 5 years, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink will be closing in August but the owner has said very little about why, only commenting, “It’s never easy to close the book on a project you feel genuinely proud of, but it’s time to move on.”

In an announcement on the firm’s website, owner Michael Schwartz said he was focusing on growing his restaurant chain from Miami but failed to say why he had decide to shut down the Cayman operation, despite painting a picture of a successful business. Nor has the firm stated what will happen to the staff currently working at the restaurant when the doors close.

Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, Grand Cayman, is closing its doors

CNS Business has asked the restaurant chain’s HQ in Miami for the reason why the restaurant is closing and what the plans are for the local staff and is awaiting a response.

Sources have told CNS that, despite the popularity of Camana Bay with Grand Cayman’s wealthier residents, the tourist traffic there is not as significant as many tenants had hoped. However, there has been no indication from Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink that this is related to its decision to close the restaurant.

Jackie Doak, the chief operating officer at Dart Realty said the unit will open as a “family-friendly pizza and pasta restaurant” later this year, operated by a group of local restaurateurs.

  1. They all sell rich, imperialist tidbits. Why can’t they sell proper food?

The problem is that there are far too many restaurants in Cayman chasing a limited amount of dollars, coupled with the fact that many of them are overpriced with variable quality of food and service.
