(CNS Business): More than 30 local entrepreneurs gathered at the Family Life Centre on Saturday to showcase their talents and innovation at the third annual Department of Commerce and Investment Small Business Expo. At the event small business owners presented their crafts and designs to around 700 attendees and  learned more about running a company through seminars on pensions, trade and business licensing and marketing.

Small Business owner Ted Green, of Ted Green Fragrances, said this type of expo gives small businesses a level of exposure that they might not get on a regular basis.

“I think an expo like this is a fantastic opportunity. You don’t have many like this one in Cayman. Being from a small community, a lot of people come out. It’s a good way and an inexpensive way to reach a lot of people,” he explained.

Green said he started making his own fragrances in 2007 and launched his company three years later. He said the islands’ national flower, the banana orchid, is the inspiration behind his most popular perfume.

“This is my first expo and it won’t be my last because the response is phenomenal,” Green said. “This is how it is, integrating with the Cayman community, getting out there and hearing people’s response, their feedback, because my product is inspired by the Cayman Islands.”

Entrepreneur Ementina Evans said this type of expo gives small business owners a chance to network, educate and connect with people in the community.

“We encourage anyone to get into this. Especially if you’re a small business you need to have the outlets and this kind of expo works for us,” she said.

Evans said she is going into her third year as the owner of Carib Sandz. She told CNS Business her product is an all-natural body exfoliating cream that is made with local ingredients on the island. When she decided to start her small business, there were government programs available that helped make it extremely easy to get started and market her product.

“There are some really great things out there for local businesses but you have to have the resources,” she said.
