(CNS Business): The Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce has asked Planning Minister Kurt Tibbetts for an update on the progress with his ministry’s plan to revitalize George Town. In a letter dated 25 August, the Chamber Council noted that construction started last week on a board walk near the public fish market in George Town, which was one of the projects suggested by the Chamber in order to improve pedestrian traffic for residents, visitors and businesses operating along the waterfront.

“This is a positive development that we support,” wrote President Johann Moxam. The Council has invited the Minister to present the report to the membership at an upcoming BE INFORMED session.

In March, the Council submitted a list of membership recommendations to improve the infrastructure, roads and parking to attract more business and residents to the historical hub of commerce, trade and community activities. The recommendations called for zoning changes to allow a hotel to be established along the harbour front, additional parking structures and public transport systems.

“It is critically important that a comprehensive plan is adopted to revitalize George Town for the benefit of all residents, business owners and visitors. Any proposed George Town dock redevelopment should complement the revitalization of George Town which has been our traditional centre for commerce and economic activity,” Moxam said.

“With the anticipated increase in cruise ship passengers it is imperative that better methods are introduced to handle the traffic that is anticipated and to determine the impacts that this will have on residents as well as the cargo port which is the lifeline for commerce in the Cayman Islands.”
