Labour department sows safety seeds
(CNS Business): A group of thirteen landscape workers had the benefit of health and safety training from the labour department’s health and safety expert recently, which the department’s director said would not only keep workers safe but keep customers happy. Senior Labour Inspector Gene Hydes led the presentations on landscaping hazards, safe work practices, what to do during accidents and emergencies, including some aspects of the labour law. During the training the gardeners worked in the golf grounds and landscaping departments at both the Ritz Carlton and Marriott Resort.
Government officials said that landscaping needs in the Cayman Islands are fast changing, and Hydes said the department was working to keep its Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training courses up to date in this area, just like many other more obvious locations such as construction sites.
The Department of Labour ensures safe and healthy working conditions for workers by enforcing standards and providing workplace safety training.
“By the end of the seminar, landscape professionals were able to improve their knowledge and skill sets as well as their credentials within the landscaping industry. By teaching them how to do the job the right way, they will better able to keep their customers and employers happy,†said Mario Ebanks, Director of Department of Labour & Pensions.
