JetBlue to fly JFK to GCM

(CNS Business): JetBlue Airways has announced that this November it will begin flights to Grand Cayman from New York and Boston. "Our Latin America and Caribbean destinations continue to flourish and based on this support that we continue to receive from our customers, we are excited to add the beautiful Cayman Islands to our growing network," said John Checketts, director of route planning for JetBlue. "Whether travellers are seeking relaxation or adventure, attractions like Seven Mile Beach, swimming with stingrays, snorkelling or scuba diving are just a few options to explore in this tropical, aquatic playground."

Starting November 15 the airline will have flights into Owen Roberts International Airport (GCM) three times per week on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), leaving at 7:00am and arriving 11:00am, with a return flight departing at noon, arriving at JFK 3:50pm; and starting 17 November it will have a Saturday flight from Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS), leaving 10: 25am and arriving 2:35pm, with a return flight departing at 3:30pm, arriving at BOS 7:25pm.

Destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean now make up almost one-third of the carrier's route network. Grand Cayman will be JetBlue's 74th destination and the 23rd destination in the Caribbean.

With this new addition, by the end of 2012 JetBlue will serve the following Latin American and Caribbean destinations: Aruba; The Bahamas (Nassau); Barbados; Bermuda; Cayman Islands (Grand Cayman); Colombia (Bogota and Cartagena); Costa Rica (Liberia and San Jose); Dominican Republic (La Romana, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, Samana, Santiago and Santo Domingo); Jamaica (Kingston and Montego Bay); Mexico (Cancun); Puerto Rico (Aguadilla, Ponce and San Juan); St. Croix; St. Lucia; St. Maarten; St. Thomas; and, Turks and Caicos (Providenciales).

Love that Boston flight!! Hope the price is right!! Nice!!

Every ting better if it come from Foreign...These carriers come and go. say what you like about Cayman Airways it is reliable.
Why don't they do a daily service if they want to make inroads into the market. They will milk the route for what it's worth this winter for a couple days a week then they will drop it like a hot potato before the summer sun warms the pavement.

Maybe you should start an airline and try out your theories.

I have also heard that all competitors must price match Cayman Airways because it's a government airline. Wasn't that one of the reasons (aside from the sub-par service) that Spirit had to cancel routing to and from the Cayman Islands? Where is the documentation confirming or denying this information? Cayman Airways claims to offer the lowest fares in the market - wouldn't this make it possible?
The price of fuel has driven up costs to fly almost anywhere, but for most of the year, we can fly to Central America and even one way to Europe for less than the price of a round trip ticket to Grand Cayman. It's unfortunate for Caymanians living abroad, because we can't get home to visit our families more often - and some of us have to save for months just to be able to afford the increased airfare home during the holidays. And let's face it, for $550+ round trip, we all expect a little more than just complimentary rum punch.

Absolutely true.  We all pay dearly for how badly Cayman Airways is run.

Not True!! Read the UK/US Air Services agreement...Cayman Airways cannot set airfares!

Wonderful news and hope they'll also add services from the west coast. Jet Blue will help drive prices down while increasing tourists from the east coast.

Yes!! More airlines competing for the JFK route means CAL has to drop prices to attract customers :D
I'm liking this.

not as I understand it... CAL (being a government entity), can set the rate at what works best for them, no other airline can set a lower rate than what CAL has to offer.

sucks to be us. doesn't it!?

It is absolutely true that we all pay so much more for our flights because of how badly Cayman Airways does business.  Friend of Mac?  No industry experience?  Fancy being a board member?

What you are saying is absolutely not true. any airline at any time can file a lower fare if they chose to do so and they do. you may want to take alittle time to research the Air Services agreement between the US and the Caymsn Islands and you would be surprised how little protection for Cayman Airways is there.
Talking crap like this without doing your proper research and knowing about the airline businesss is just showing how uneducated and one sided you are.
Cayman Airways has been used on many occassions to blaze the trail so to speak to get major carriers interested in a particular route. Once that carrier has built up significant service that CAL pulls off of that destination and moves to create other opportunities else where.
Before you put your mouth in gear to be critical next ime do your research and read the Air Services Agreement between the UK and Anthe Us for which the Cayman Islands and CaymanAirways are a part.

Cayman has the right to set airfares to benefit its national carrier. Whether it does so or not is another question.

Cayman Airways has no such right...Read the UK/US Air Services Agreement!

Been there, done that. Tariffs must be filed and can be rejected.

Ha Ha, that's what you think as I believe other carriers cannot charge less that CAL fares. I maybe incorrect regarding this, but.......

Fares between JFK and Cayman are already low on Cayman Airways. The common thought is that airplanes consume no fuel, and its all done for free. People will pay $600.00 for a smart phone (not a smart move) without grumbling, and pay more for a nights stay at the hotels, than the entire airfare cost.

Once again we see a foreign airline cashing in on the investment that CAL and the Tourism Dept have made in developing these two routes.

If CAL did not charge what they did, air travel to the US could be 50% cheaper for us all and the tourism industry would be doing much better.

Perhaps you work for CAL but it strikes me that the only person cashing in will be the consumer! CAL's prices are sky high because they have a monopoly on the direct flights.  In any event, more competiton (and therefore more flights) is better for everybody as it can only increase demand further.

I'm not knocking JetBlue's plans but it is a pity the flight timings don't tie in a bit better with UK/European services because this could have made a handy alternative routing to the islands.
There tend to be plenty of cheap transatlantic fare deals into JFK and BOS that JetBlue could have cashed in on to fill seats on these routes if the timings had been better.
