Crane reaches dizzy heights

image004 (254x300).jpg(CNS): The crane being used by the general contractors on a Seven Mile Beach condominium broke local records this week when it was extended up to 202 feet, becoming the tallest structure in the Cayman Islands. The crane’s extension comes ahead of the anticipated completion of what will be the country’s tallest residential building. Following a controversial amendment to the planning law in 2010 that now allows developers to exceed the seven story limit up to as many as ten floors in the main tourist zone, the developers of WaterColours immediately adapted their plans to take advantage of the extra floors.

The luxury condominium complex, which is on the former site of the Beach Club and is set to be finished late next year, will be nine storeys of solid concrete with the seam roof then taking the new structure to the height of a 10 storey building.

One of the only new developments on Seven Mile Beach, it has “boosted the local construction industry by adding many jobs to the marketplace, as well as attracting international investors aiding the local economy,” said the realtors for the development Kim Lund and James Bovell of RE/MAX Cayman Islands.  Arch and Godfrey are the general contractors fo the project.

As the tallest residential building on Seven mile Beach, those rich enough to afford one of the condos on the top floors will have panoramic views and ocean vistas not offered anywhere else in Grand Cayman’s main tourist area.

The changes to the law were passed by legislators in July 2010, but so far the Watercolours building is the first to take advantage of the increase in height to 130 feet or ten storeys, whichever is less. The change only applies to properties in the Seven Mile Beach zone because, as the premier who is responsible for development and planning said, it was better to attract new development to the already more dense area.

“This will give momentum to the renewal of some of the older properties on the beach, allowing them to be renovated or rebuilt,” Bush said in the Legislative Assembly at the time.

I see no differnce between a 10 story building and a 20 story building except that its more profitable.  I also used to go to beach club and did not see a lot of other caymanians there. Some but not that many. In fact i see more caymanians at the new tiki beach which are the same owners as beach club. It seems they like new and improved stuff too.

Northward tower is 260ft
CITN/Westar tower is 300ft

I think it's terrific.  The concrete, the Miami-ification..  it feels vibrant and alive. It brings interesting people with some style and panache, all the better that they are rich! There is no shame in having money and blowing it on buildings and cars and toys and interests.  These folks presence bring ancilliary services and benefits to the economy.  Most of the folks I've met walking on the beach staring at "their new home being built" are as nice as the day is long. They add a great deal to the character of the island and I'm tickled pink to see them come. Long live tall buildings.  The past is just that - the past.

Is there a government department that certifies these installation and confirms insurance of these structures. Given this crane's location on busy 7-mile beach road this should be looked into.

The 10-storey amendment was not really controversial.

Some folks prefered to keep it at 7 storesy and some wanted it higher than 10. Given the land values there now as well as the economic down turn the government chose to stimulate the local construction industry by improving the return on investments. It apparently worked.

I had a kite once that took all 500ft of cord before it popped, does that count?

A penthouse view of Mount Trashmore - how grand!

Tom Jones' crane is bigger than that.

What a shame...All that for money or those who have money...sure miss my beach club days...Soon will be just like miami beach...Poor caymanians!!!

Just for clarity, there are several communications towers around town and Northward that is much taller than 202 feet

I wonder if there has again been a free condo to the first man who made it happen. We are on the way to building a concrete canyon on the SMB corridor to serve the interests of a few and it wont look pretty. I am also tired of the (yes we know that this might be unpopular and not necessarily in the interest of the country but) it creates a few more jobs (for all you sods at the bottom of the employment ladder and quite a number of WP holders) and that should be enough justification for any wrongs or bad policy it entails! It isnt and it is nauseating to see that rolled it incessantly!
