(CNS Business): People living in the district of West Bay will soon see a new development popping up beside Foster’s Food Fair. Cayman Islands’ Jacques Scott Group Ltd has big plans to build a new liquor store and retail complex in the opened plot. However, Retail Division Manager David Hubble said the company is still in the first phase of the project and, as of now, everything is still in the hands of the planning board.

“There’s no big liquor store in the area that has a large wine selection, and that’s what we really want to add to that area. So people staying or people who live in West Bay won’t have to travel all the way into town to fulfill their needs,” Hubble said.

He explained that this development has been a long time coming and it’s something that they have had in the works for the past five years. Hubble said the company is always looking for new places to expand and offer that one-stop-shop experience for customers.

“It’s an ideal spot, perfect location. It’s right near the four-way stop, right next to the supermarket,” he stated.

The project was originally proposed for Christmas 2014 but was delayed due to planning issues. In 2010 Jacques Scott Group was denied a retail licence by the Liquor Licensing Board for the location, but the company appealed that denial and now Hubble said everything is approved and ready to go.

The store will be around 2,000-square-feet and have two levels. Hubble explained Jacques Scott Group would be the anchor tenant for the complex on the bottom level, and at least 2 or 3 other spaces will be available for retail rentals.

“It’s just going to be a standard, nice and modern liquor store. It will have security and just convenient for tourists and locals who live nearby by offering items the other stores don’t have,” he stated.

The company believes this is a positive thing for West Bay and would bring business and additional employment to the area.

“It will bring a few job opportunities for the locals. We are always looking for locals to fill our spots at each of our locations,” Hubble said.

CNS Business reached out to the smaller liquor stores nearby who said they are not too keen about this up and coming project, but Hubble stated it’s not their intention to hurt smaller liquor stores in the area.

“Their clients will remain loyal to them. We are just giving the area a bigger selection. I mean, we have one in Savannah and we’re not affecting smaller liquor stores there that are right across the road,” he explained.

As of now, the company is unsure what the price tag for this new complex will be. Hubble said hopefully in the next three months, after the project goes through planning, they will begin to break ground.

The liquor store will be opened Monday through Saturday with the hours of 10am to 10pm.
